SPECIAL REPORT #4
Military Radar/Visual Cases
Denied Evidence of UFO Reality
Introduction
These special reports are compiled by the research team of Ralph E. Heick and Clifford E. Stone. They are not copyrighted as we desire this information be available to the Public at large.
For the most part, these reports are taken directly from the reports and records released by government agencies because of FOI/PA Requests. It is our desire to include the government records to these reports so that the reader may determine for himself as to the validity of the information provided.
Special Report #4 contains information taken from U.S. Government documents that have been classified since 1955 and was only declassified on September 7, 1989 by Major General C. Norman Wood, Assistant Chief of Staff, Air Intelligence for release to me. The classification level of these documents were from Secret to Top Secret. To be sure, the National Security Agency (NSA) currently has in its possession additional information dealing with the cases in this report classified at the Top Secret level and compartmented under “UMBRA” and “ALTRA” within the SCI Program, giving that information maintained by the NSA a “TOP SECRET/SCI” Classification. These documents are considered important in that they clearly show that the National Security Agency has in its possession sophisticated electronic evidence of the existence of flying saucers. Evidence that the National Security Agency denys the existence of to this every day.
General Discussion
In the early morning hours of July 17, 1957 a U.S. Air Force RB-47, equipped with electronic countermeasures (ECM equipment) was followed by a UFO for about one and one half hours, covering a distance of more than 700 miles. This object was observed visually by the crew, tracked by ground radar and detected by the on board ECM equipment of the RB-47.
This case was brought to the attention of the Condon Committee for its consideration in the so-called “Scientific Study of Unidentified Flying Objects.” After studying this case, the Condon Committee concluded, “If a report of this incident, written either by the RB-47 crew or the Wing Intelligence personnel, was submitted in 1957, it apparently is no longer in existence. Moving pictures of radar scope displays and other data said to have been recorded during the incident apparently never existed. Evaluation of the experience must, therefore, rest entirely on the recollection of the crew members ten years after the event. These descriptions are not adequate to allow identification of the phenomenon encountered.”
Out of all the things wrong with the actions of the Condon Committee, I believe the most critical were the facts that (1) regardless of the evidence, they had no plans to “prove” the existence of UFOs; (2) although the Condon Committee was cleared for Secret, the United States Air Force was determined to restrict them to the Project Blue Book Files and keep them clear of Air Force Intelligence Files as the information concerning the most interesting cases was classified at the Top Secret level and compartmented under the SCI Program; and (3) above all the U.S. Air Force had to keep the fact that other government agencies (mainly the National Security Agency) were active in UFO investigations from the Condon Committee and the American Public.
The reader of this report should keep in mind that the so-called “Scientific Study of Unidentified Flying Objects” was forced upon the U.S. Air Force by Congress. Since the Blue Book Files were mostly public information by this time anyhow, the Air Force did not really mind a scientific “look-see” of these files. However, the Air Force very much minded anyone knowing about, little lone seeing, the classified (Top Secret/SCI) Air Intelligence UFO Files. Also, of top priority was to keep secret the involvement of other government agencies concerning UFOs.
Thanks to the efforts of the late Dr. James E. McDonald, several military records dealing with the above RB-47 case have been brought to light. However, these documents do not indicate what happened to the evidence gathered in this case. Also, the question remained; are there more such cases and if so, who has the evidence and the records of such cases?
We shall see in this report that not only are there similar cases but also, the missing evidence is in the possession of the National Security Agency where it remains highly classified (Top Secret/SCI).
The following case files are taken directly from the reports on file with Air Intelligence and are copies of the reports forwarded to the National Security Agency at the
Agency’s request. These case files shall be quoted exactly as they appear in the reports with comments made by this author after the quoted case files. It is felt that this is the best way in which the reader of this report can best see the concern expressed by the National Security Agency regarding these cases.
Case Files
“ITEM 1. At 2100Z on 1 June (1955), an eastbound RB-47 experienced electronic contact with an unknown aircraft or object in the area of Devon Island. A bright return was received on the APG-32 set (radar) for 20 minutes and the warning light flashed intermittently. The RB-47’s X-system recorded what was possibly the sweep of another radar nearby. Contact was lost at 2120Z. No visual contact established.”
“on the return westbound flight, the APG-32 again had a contact for 30 minutes duration at approximately 8,000 yards. This time no indication was registered by the warning light. No visual contact made. ****”
“Coordinates and times as follows:
First Contact | (estimate) | 74 | 40’N-105 | . 00 ‘W | 2100Z | 1 | June |
Contact lost | 76 | 15’N-31 | 00 ‘W | 2120Z | 1 | June | |
Second Contact | (estimate) | 74 | 30’N-90 | 30 ‘W | 2400Z | 1 | June |
Contact lost | 74 | 10’N-91 | 00’W | 0030Z | 2 | June” |
“ITEM 2. At 0030Z on 4 June (1955) , a westbound RB-47 experienced electronic and visual contact with an unknown aircraft or object in the Melville Sound area. The RB-47 gun warning light was flashing intermittently and the 5 radar (s) had a contact at 7,000 yards range. Visual contact was made by crew chief, who describes aircraft as glistening silver metallic. The aircraft was first seen low and to the rear of the RB-47. It maintained a position low and to the rear and slightly right of the RB-47. The configuration of the aircraft was obscured by contrails. The aircraft broke off contact to the north with an increase in speed. The RB-47 was at 32,000 (feet) indicating Mach (speed of of sound) .735. Although gun camera films are available, they are of such poor quality that no information can be obtained from them. The radar and visual contacts were maintained for a total of 9 minutes.****
Coordinates and times are as follows:
73 45’N – 111 35’W 0049Z 4 June
“ITEM 3. At 0050Z on 7 June (1955), a westbound RB-47 enroute to Eilson AFB, Alaska, at 35,000 feet experienced electronic contact southeast of Banks Island. The RB-47 detected an aircraft/object at 3,500 yards and at the same level as the aircraft. The scope return was small and rectangular. The pilot interpreted it to be a form of jamming. The target warning light went on and off 3 times in as many minutes. No visual or K-system contacts.****
Coordinates and times are as follows:
Contact established 71 02’N – 127 00’W 0050Z 7 June
Contact lost 0053Z 7 June
(possibly later)
“ITEM 4. At 2044Z on 8 June (1955), an eastbound RB-47 at 30,000 feet experienced electronic and visual contact with an unknown aircraft south of Bathurst Island. The RB-47 was flying at 30,000 and indicating 450 knots. The warning light flashed and 2 indications were observed on APG-32 scope. The K-system scope showed indications of sweeping by another radar. Visual contact indicates aircraft was 5 to 10,000 feet above RB-47 and approximately 5-10 miles behind for approximately 20 minutes. The co-pilot of RB-47 states aircraft had fighter configuration. Contrail was observed as aircraft disappeared. Contrail also sighted by 2nd RB-47 80 miles behind 1st; therefore, about 70 miles behind sighted aircraft. Distance suggests contrails remain visible for some time.****
Coordinates and times are as follows:
Contact established 74 26’N – 103 25’W 2044Z 8 June
contact lost 2140Z 8 June”
The preceding cases were not made available to the Condon Committee because they were not considered to have a need to know even through they were to evaluate the information the U.S. Government had on UFO’s and decide if in fact UFO’s were something real and if they presented a threat to our national security. Also, these cases were not made a part of Project Blue Book as the U.S. Intelligence Community did consider these reports as something real and a potential threat to our national security.
These four cases in this author’s opinion, best illustrate what General Bolender of the U.S. Air Force meant when he stated in a memo dated October 20, 1969 that, “reports of unidentified flying objects which could affect national security would continue to be handle in accordance with JANAP 146 or Air Force Manual 55-11, and are not part of the Blue Book System.” Also, the cover letter forwarding these documents to the National Security Agency (NSA) clearly show NSA interest in UFO’s at a very early date while maintaining that they had no interest at all. To be sure much more information exist on these cases. However, that information is presently classified in the interest of national security by the National Security Agency.
Does not the public have a right to know the truth?
Conclusions
While the U.S. Intelligence Community does not wish to admit it, much of what our Government knows concerning UFO’s remains classified and out of the reach of the public and private researchers. The intelligence community has even denied the existence of documents only to have them surface at a later date.
With the state of the art of the technology presently available to UFO researchers, they could come to some hard conclusions concerning these RB-47 cases in this report. However, with the NSA denying the every existence, as well as any knowledge, of these cases it is quite unlikely we will be afforded the opportunity to access the information they do have.
While our government is the most open government in the world and we must rely on what they say, what they say is not always truthful. Especially when it comes to what they really know about UFO’s.
